Tammy Root
In 1987, Tammy began her zoo keeping career and has been an animal keeper ever since. She has worked at a variety of zoos and with a variety of animals.
In 1992, she studied the importance of zoo education at Monkey Jungle in Miami, Florida and has been heavily involved in education since. Throughout the numerous classes she has taught and keeper presentations she has given, she has opened up a new world to many people of all ages.
Within her career, she has been actively involved in operant conditioning with a wide variety of species. She has not only taught animals show behaviors, but also husbandry behaviors as well. Tammy has also developed animal training and animal enrichment workshops for colleagues and conference attendees.
In addition to her career as a zoo keeper, she has worked part-time for different veterinary hospitals, been actively involved in AAZK (American Association of Zoo Keepers) and has completed several research projects.
Tammy Root obtained her BA in Wildlife Science from Purdue University, in 1993 and her MS in Management from Indiana Tech, in 2004. She has been a zoo keeper for over 20 years and has worked with every class of animal.
